Top EU Marketplaces for Non-EU Brands: What Each Platform Actually Requires
Amazon DE is not the whole picture. Bol, Zalando, FNAC, and others reach audiences Amazon does not. Each also has distinct compliance requirements before you can list.
The EU Marketplace Landscape for Non-EU Brands
Most non-EU brands start with Amazon DE or Amazon FR and assume that is EU e-commerce. It is not. Amazon’s combined EU share sits around 30% of online retail. The remaining 70% flows through national platforms, verticals, and DTC.
The practical consideration for non-EU brands is not which marketplace has the highest overall GMV. It is which platforms reach your customer in the categories where you compete, what compliance each requires before you can list, and whether you have the operating structure to meet those requirements without launching separately in each market.
Regardless of platform, every EU marketplace requires: a valid EU VAT number on the seller account, an Importer of Record for goods entering the EU, and a GPSR Responsible Person on product listings from December 2024. The platforms differ in how strictly they verify these and what additional platform-specific requirements exist.
Amazon EU: High Volume, High Compliance Scrutiny
Amazon operates unified pan-European selling through a single seller account covering DE, FR, IT, ES, NL, SE, PL, and BE. Listing once reaches all markets. But Amazon’s compliance enforcement is the strictest of any EU marketplace.
| Requirement | What Amazon checks | Consequence of non-compliance |
|---|---|---|
| EU VAT number | Verified per country where stock is held. Account health dashboard flags missing registrations. | Account suspension in affected marketplace. Back-VAT liability. |
| GPSR Responsible Person | Required on every product listing. Amazon enforces via listing attributes, not just account-level. | Listing suppression. Cannot be resolved without valid EU AR details. |
| IOR consistency | IOR entity on customs declarations must match VAT number on seller account. | Listing suppression, FBA inbound rejection. |
| EPR registration numbers | Required for packaging, electronics, batteries in DE, FR, and expanding to other markets. | Listing blocked in affected category. Account notice for non-registration. |
| IOSS handling | Amazon handles IOSS for seller orders. Do not use your own IOSS number for Amazon sales. | Double VAT remittance. Reconciliation problem on IOSS returns. |
Amazon offers VAT registration services through third-party partners. These cover VAT filings only. The IOR requirement for inbound shipments to FBA is separate. Brands often conflate the two and discover the gap when their first FBA inbound is rejected.
Key EU Marketplaces Beyond Amazon
These platforms each have meaningful scale in their home markets and real traction for specific product categories. None of them reach their customers via Amazon.
Dutch consumer preference is strong for Bol over Amazon. Brands in electronics and home categories frequently find better conversion rates here than on Amazon NL.
Selective onboarding. Zalando vets brand fit before access. Compliance documentation (VAT, IOR, GPSR) must be in order before the application proceeds.
French fiscal rep requirement applies here. Non-EU brands cannot list on FNAC without a French VAT registration backed by a fiscal representative.
Poland is the EU’s sixth-largest e-commerce market and Amazon has not established dominance here. Allegro is the default. Often overlooked by non-EU brands.
Specialist positioning means less competition from generalist sellers. Higher average order values than most consumer marketplaces. CE marking and safety documentation scrutinised carefully.
Same French fiscal rep requirement as FNAC. Often makes sense to combine French marketplace presence across Cdiscount and FNAC with a single fiscal representative.
Selective but high-value. Otto’s customer base skews towards higher-income households. Approval process is more rigorous than Amazon. Brand presentation and product quality are evaluated.
eBay DE is a serious channel for auto parts and specialist electronics. Compliance requirements have tightened significantly since 2021. VAT verification is now active on seller accounts.
What Each Platform Requires from Non-EU Brands
Core requirements are consistent. Enforcement approach and platform-specific documentation vary.

Which EU Marketplaces to Prioritise
The right starting point depends on product category, not market size. A brand selling fashion with no German VAT registration cannot list on Zalando DE regardless of product quality. Start with the markets your compliance structure supports, then expand.
| Category | Priority platforms | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fashion and apparel | Zalando, Amazon EU, Otto | Zalando reaches audiences that do not visit Amazon. Otto’s German customer base is high-value for premium apparel. |
| Consumer electronics | Amazon EU, Bol, FNAC Darty | FNAC is the go-to electronics destination in France. Bol dominates Dutch electronics. Amazon covers the rest. |
| Home and furniture | Amazon EU, Otto, ManoMano | Otto indexes strongly for home. ManoMano is the specialist channel for home improvement and tools. |
| Baby and children’s | Amazon EU, Bol, Cdiscount | High compliance scrutiny in this category across all platforms. Bol strong in Benelux for family products. |
| Sports and outdoor | Amazon EU, Zalando | Zalando is a serious channel for sports and activewear. Decathlon does not operate a third-party marketplace but is a wholesale buyer. |
| DIY and tools | ManoMano, Amazon EU | ManoMano’s specialist positioning reduces competition. CE marking documentation critical for this category. |
The compliance requirements across all EU marketplaces are variants of the same core set: VAT, IOR, GPSR, and in some markets, fiscal representation. One operating structure that satisfies these requirements covers all platforms simultaneously. You do not build compliance separately per marketplace.
EuroSOR satisfies the compliance requirements of every major EU marketplace under one contract.
EuroSOR (WareIQ Europe B.V., Netherlands) acts as your EU entity across all platforms. VAT registrations, IOR on every inbound shipment, GPSR Responsible Person details, and EPR registrations all reference the same entity. One set of compliance documentation. No per-platform setup.
| Requirement | Without EuroSOR | With EuroSOR |
|---|---|---|
| VAT + Fiscal Rep | Separate registration per country. Fiscal rep needed for France, Spain. Multiple providers. | EuroSOR is the EU entity. VAT handled within structure. No separate fiscal rep. |
| IOR on marketplace inbounds | Carrier named as IOR or separate broker engaged per shipment. IOR and VAT entity may not match. | EuroSOR named as IOR. Matches VAT entity across Amazon, Bol, Zalando, and all other platforms. |
| GPSR / Authorised Representative | Separate AR appointment. Details added manually per listing across each platform. | EuroSOR is the GPSR Responsible Person. Same entity referenced across all listings. |
| New marketplace expansion | New VAT registration, new IOR arrangement, new compliance documentation for each market. | Add a new marketplace within existing structure. No new provider or registration required. |
